La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri – d’s histouaithes dé not’ Île / Being Jersey, Jersey Museum and Art Gallery

Studio ZNA worked with Nissen Richards Studio to design the lighting for a new permanent exhibition for The Jersey Museum and Art Gallery featuring a group of stories arranged as ‘narrative islands’. The 485 sq m exhibition titled ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri – d’s histouaithes dé not’ Île / Being Jersey’, involved a complete transformation of the previous permanent exhibition.

We used light to hone in on the idea of the 'narrative islands' by creating focused and glowing moments of light on core objects. The client’s ambition was to hero singular objects and enhance their importance with lighting; to achieve this we designed bespoke showcase details tailored to each object while also ensuring future flexibility in rotating objects. We also designed and commissioned a new integrated system for the gallery track lights that houses circulation, graphics, exhibition, cleaning and emergency lighting all in one for an easy user interface. For the ‘Reflection’ space with its views out over Jersey we designed a dynamic lightbox ceiling that gently changes in brightness to harness daylight along with softly shifting in colour temperature to mimic daylight through the various times of day - this allowed for a moment of visual refresh while creating a calming and gentle space for the visitor to enjoy the views of Jersey.
